Danele Rotharmel is a talented author and cyber friend who encourages me almost every time we chat. It’s my pleasure to have her on my blog talking about new beginnings.
I also want to introduce you to her soon to be released novel “Time Search.” It’s the latest in her Time Councilor Chronicles Series.
Danele Rotharmel’s life took an unexpected turn when a mysterious illness brought her close to death. Eventually, she learned that a carbon monoxide leak from a faulty furnace was poisoning her. This poisoning triggered Multiple Chemical Sensitivity causing her to be put in quarantine. For seven years, she could only talk to friends and extended family through a windowpane. During this time, she wrote the first six books in The Time Counselor Chronicles. Although her journey back to health was difficult, it provided her the opportunity to grow closer to God and write her books. For that, she’s forever thankful.

I love making New Year’s resolutions. In December, I always sit down and write a long list of the changes I want to make. Unfortunately, by this time of the year, I’ve usually given up on most of my goals. My fancy, new jogging shoes are inevitably collecting dust. My cupboards are back to being full of potato chips, chocolate bars, and cookies. And the kale I purchased is wilting into a forgotten, green mush in the back of the fridge. Even though most of my New Year’s resolutions fall by the wayside, I keep making them. Do you want to know why? The answer is simple—some resolutions actually stick and transform my life.
I’ve spent many years suffering from severe illness—and no, it isn’t just because I refuse to eat kale. You see, a while back my furnace had a carbon monoxide leak. Carbon monoxide is odorless—it’s called a silent killer. The early symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning mimic the flu, so I didn’t realize I was in trouble until it was too late. The poisoning resulted in a vast array of health problems, including multiple chemical sensitivity and partial amnesia. It also strangled the creative side of my personality. I’ve always loved to write, but after the poisoning, I had a horrible case of writer’s block that lasted for years. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t make my stories sing. Eventually, I gave up on my dream of being a writer.
As the years passed and my body began to heal, I gradually realized that the cobwebs clouding my mind were disappearing. I felt certain that I could write again, but I was afraid to try. After all, what if I failed?
That year, when December rolled around, I made one of the most important New Year’s resolutions of my life. I decided to try and transform one of my old short stories into a novel. I didn’t tell anyone what I was doing, and I was terrified that I would fail. I can still remember how nervous I felt when I turned on my computer and put my fingers on the keyboard. Even though I wasn’t sure I could do it, I kept trying, and eventually, my words began to sing. Sentences began forming with an ease that amazed me. Writing became a thing of joy! Each day, I spent anywhere from eight to eighteen hours at my computer. Soon my first novel, Time Tsunami, was written. I was having so much fun that I kept writing, penning my second novel, Time Trap. By the time I finished Time Trap, I was addicted to my characters, and I couldn’t give them up. My third novel, Time Search, was crafted with ease. After that, I wrote three more novels in The Time Counselor Chronicles.
A few years later, I made another life-changing New Year’s resolution. I decided to seek publication. I didn’t have a clue how to find a publisher for my novels, but I was determined to try. Not knowing what else to do, I signed up for a Christian Writer’s Conference and underwent interviews with several editors. Even though I didn’t know how to pitch a book, one of those interviews led to the publication of my novels. As I write this article, paperback copies of Time Tsunami and Time Trap are sitting on my bookshelf, and my third book, Time Search, has just become available for sale.
New Year’s resolutions come and go, but every once in a while—when you don’t give up—your life completely changes! If you have a dream that you’re afraid to tackle, I’d like to encourage you to take a deep breath, write a resolution on a slip of paper, and reach for your goal. Time Tsunami, Time Trap, and Time Search are proof that the impossible isn’t actually impossible after all. All you need for a dream to come true is a first step in the right direction. Believe me, if my dreams can come true, yours can too!
