April is here! I'm all smiles. I enjoy warm weather. When I'm not outside on my porch, writing (yeah, southern all the way) I'm sitting under my pecan tree reading a good book. Author Alexis A. Goring's new novel, A Second Chance is sure to be a great spring read.
Alexis A. Goring is a passionate writer with a degree in Print Journalism and an MFA in Creative Writing. She loves the art of storytelling and hopes that her stories will connect readers with the enduring, forever love of Jesus Christ.
Alexis, what do you enjoy doing when you not writing?
When not writing, I like to spend time at the mall and bookstore. Barnes & Noble (bookstore) has a special place in my heart! I love going there and browsing books. I also love spending time in the café inside the bookstore with something to eat, drink and a good book to read.
What state do you live in?
I live in Maryland. The area is beautiful! I am a short drive from the country (down one road) and the city (down the other road). I live in the suburbs, about 25 minutes outside of the state capital (Annapolis). I love spending time in Annapolis, too. It is a beautiful city!
A Second Chance
Newly single food critic and newspaper reporter Traci Hightower is done with dating. After the man of her dreams left her at the altar on their wedding day and ran off with the woman she thought was her best friend, Traci resolves to focus on work and resigns herself to being a bachelorette for life.
Marc Roberts is a political reporter who is known as Mr. Nice Guy, the one who always finishes last. However, Marc’s compassion and kindness are of invaluable help to his newly widowed sister Gina Braxton who is trying to raise her two kids in the wake of her firefighter husband’s death.
Traci and Marc may be the perfect match, but they don’t know it yet. With God’s guidance and the help of Gina’s matchmaking skills honed by her career as a bestselling romance novelist, there is hope for a happily ever after for these two broken hearts.
A Second Chance is a wonderful title. How did you choose the title of your book?
It was the first title that popped in my head and since my main characters are getting a second chance in love, I thought that it was the perfect title for this story.
What inspired you to write A Second Chance?
Nothing in particular inspired me to write this book. I just thought that it would be a way to give a voice and hope to jilted brides. I also thought that it would be nice to pay a tribute to the nice guys of the world who don’t get too much attention from the ladies or have their heart broken often. My story’s heroine, Traci, was left at the altar on her wedding day when her fiancé ran off with her Maid of Honor. This crushed Traci’s heart so she gave up on love and focused on work…until she met Marc, who made her feel in ways that she never thought she could feel again. Before he met Traci, Marc was used to being dumped by his girlfriends who said he was “too nice” and that they “just want to be friends.” But his niceness is of invaluable help to his newly widowed sister who is struggling to raise her two children while keeping up with her lucrative career as a famous inspirational romance novelist. Marc helps his sister by babysitting her kids and getting them out of the house so that she can focus on her book deadlines. I thought that it would be a good idea to draw on Gina’s skills as a romance novelist and of course, God’s guidance to bring Traci and Marc together. Now to find out how this works, you’ll have to read my book!
What is your favorite scene/chapter?
My favorite scene is toward the end of the book when Marc pays a surprise visit to Traci’s parents’ house. They live in a beautiful hacienda in Northern California. If you want to know why he visits Traci’s parents, you’ll have to read my book! Ha-ha.
Is there a message in this novel, you want readers to grasp?
Yes. I want readers to take to heart this Bible verse, Jeremiah 29:11 because no matter what, it is important to hold on to God’s promises. He says in Jeremiah 29:11 that He (God) has good plans for your life. I know that when times get tough, it’s hard to believe that but God’s Word is true. So always hold onto hope. He loves you!
Alexis, God's peace is wonderful, when we stand firm with His promises.
Are you working on a new project you can tell us about it?
Yes. I am writing my next two books! One is about a fictional five-star quality restaurant in the heart of a major city and the characters that love it. The other story is about a wedding photographer who’s never been in love.

Hello everyone, I'd like to share with you a unique devotional from a special author, Julie Arduini. I'm lucky to have her as one of my critique's in my ACFW critique group.
Julie Arduini loves to encourage readers to surrender the good, the bad, and ---maybe one day---the chocolate. She’s the author of ENTRUSTED: Surrendering the Present, as well as ENTANGLED: Surrendering the Past. The last book in the series, ENGAGED: Surrendering the Future, is coming soon. She also shares her story in the infertility devotional, A WALK IN THE VALLEY. She blogs every other Wednesday for Christians Read. She resides in Ohio with her husband and two children. Julie, your new devotional is a distinctive take on most Bible help mates. What sparked Finding Freedom Through Surrender?
Living an Out-of-the-Box Faith
When I knew God was calling me to write, I took it very seriously. I had been hung up for years on fear of what others thought, and fear of rejection. Writing wasn’t the safest fields to enter with that kind of baggage, but I wanted to be in His will.
It’s been a journey of faith, and as I trusted Him with writing, He healed me from fear and invited me to do things I could never think I could do. I never thought I would write for anyone beyond a small circle of loved ones, much less have an Amazon profile. I certainly never had a vision that I’d be with a publisher, only to follow His leading that would have me leave and branch out with my own media ministry.
What I’ve learned over the years is that every time the Lord asks me to do something out of my comfort zone, He takes care of me. He provides everything I need, including wisdom and discernment to carry out the task. The faster I surrender, the more favor He gives. It’s a radical ride!
Late last year I was plotting out ENGAGED, the last book in my Surrendering Time contemporary romance series. The ideas were coming together and I was excited, already polling readers on what kind of series they would want to read next. Before I could get too excited about their feedback, I felt that nudge I’ve come to known as His. The plan He was asking me to hatch was one I haven’t seen or read anywhere else. It was completely out of the box, way outside of my comfort zone, and in all transparency, kind of crazy.
Finding Freedom Through Surrender-A 30 Day Devotional is exactly what it says, but so much more. I feel most comfortable with fiction, yet this is a non-fiction work. I haven’t created a devotional by myself. I certainly haven’t written anything using the point of view (POV) from the characters in my series, or the surrender themes from ENTRUSTED, ENTANGLED, and ENGAGED.
I felt silly writing it. Yet, as I promised to write what God asked when He asked, I obeyed. The themes came together with a weekly theme filled with six readings per week. The sixth reading was always from my own personal experience. The other five were from the characters of the romance books and their surrender testimony. What set it apart was for readers who know my series, it’s a great visit with the characters as they wait on ENGAGED. If someone hasn’t read ENTRUSTED, ENTANGLED, or ENGAGED, they will become familiar with the series and characters without having any plots spoiled.
When I finished, I was surprised at how encouraging I found the devotional to be. Every day has a Bible verse that matches the reading. The themes are all things we can relate to: surrendering fear, loss, change, regret, and the future. I questioned the sanity of the project, but as always, God knew what He was doing.
I had a choice---to look at it from the perspective that this little side project was taking me away from ENGAGED---or that I was on a God-ordained journey that had purpose, even if I didn’t understand it. ENGAGED is all about surrendering your plans for God’s, so I find it funny I had to do just that with the book. Now that the book is available in eBook form, I have had an easier time getting to my laptop and working on ENGAGED than I have any other time with any other book. The revisions have been minimal, something I’m not used to. I really believe God is taking care of me because I obeyed.
If God is calling you to do something out of the box, don’t be afraid. He never gives us an assignment and walks off, wishing us luck. He stays with us. Goes ahead of us, even. He provides. It really is worth the journey you will take!
Finding Freedom Through Surrender is a 30 day devotional featuring surrender issues from Julie Arduini's Surrendering Time contemporary romance series. What makes it unique is it is written by the characters from ENTRUSTED, ENTANGLED, and ENGAGED, as well as from the author.
The devotionals encourage readers to let go of fear, loss, change, regret, and the future as they surrender the good, the bad, and---maybe one day---the chocolate.
For those that enjoyed ENTRUSTED and ENTANGLED, the devotional will be a visit with beloved characters while waiting for book 3 in the Surrendering Time series, ENGAGED. If the reader is new to Julie Arduini's writing, they will be encouraged to find freedom while learning about the characters from her first contemporary romance series.
